The marketplaces are quiet; the streets deserted. The rumours in the taverns and the whispers in the inns all suggest the same the evil necromancer Vorakesh is raising undead legions to help him bring back Margath, the High Lord of All Dragonkind. If the realm has ever needed heroes, this is the time!

In Runebound, up to six players can adventure in a fantasy realm full of danger and peril. Travel down raging rivers, explore dark and mysterious forests, and fight all manner of heinous beasts intent on stopping you from your goal destroying the great dragon Margath before he destroys the land.

A complete revision of the original, Runebound Second Edition has an updated game board, revised rules, new and more challenging monsters, and twelve plastic figures to represent the stalwart heroes of the realm. This epic game of high fantasy is now better than ever!

Runebound is a fantasy adventure board game for 2-6 players.

BRILLIANT RPG-LITE ADVENTURE GAME.

I wanted an adventure game similar to Talisman, et al, that would allow players to explore a fantasy game-world in boardgame form. This is that game. The hunt has been called off!
On the climb up Geek Mountain, this is one of the wayposts.

The graphic design on the cards, and the artwork itself, is up there with the very best in CCGs. The board is thick, sturdy, and functional; a little more fancy touches on the board would have been nice though - but it's no biggy. The components are uniformly excellent, and the box big enough to fill with other bits and bobs too, like expansion packs, etc.
The rules are clear, with examples; nothing is that complicated for a hardened gamer.
The card and dice driven systems work very well. The movement dice are growing on me too.
Combat is handled particularly effectively, and more intricately than I was expecting; a multi-phase affair with allies jumping into the fray, runes cast, and artifacts/abilities used. This leads to multiple decisions by the player on any given turn.

Some say that the central quest maybe a tad hackneyed.
So what?
You get to travel a strange land, sword in hand, looking for villainous dragons to slay - that's how I want an adventure game to pan out for pity's sake!
If you are looking for variety, other expansions with alternate endgames can be bought.
Crucially, this game is FUN. A great deal of geeky pleasure can be wrought from forging a hero from humble beginnings, and then wielding her with a firm hand once she has become all-powerful. Just like in real life. Ha!

I really don't think that the game needs many house rules. I would recommend, however, ditching the Doomtrack mechanism for one of your own: it stinks.
Replace the plastic figures with painted minis, and also the experience tokens with coloured glass pebbles, and you're ready to eviscerate dragonkind with the very best of us.

All in all, this game does everthing that could be asked of it, and then a little bit more. I would certainly not turn down a game, and heartily advise all who like this sort of thing to buy it.
Runebound also plays marvellously well solo.
