The world of men, called Midgard, is in its final days, and the battle at the end of the world, called Ragnarok, has begun. Those warriors brave enough to fight to the end will have a hallowed place in the halls of Valhalla when the battle is over, but only one clan will hold the seat of highest honour. Will it be yours? Midgard is a strategic board game of kingdom control for 3 to 5 players ... with a twist. Over three escalating rounds, players semisecretly draft from decks of action cards, taking cards they need for their strategy or denying their opponents the best cards in the rotation. Then, after the action cards are played out, comes Ragnarok, in which some kingdoms will become doomed. And all battling vikings therein are destroyed in glorious rapture, scoring many points for their owners. Thousands of possible combinations and interactions make Midgard endlessly replayable, and always tense right up until the end of the world!

One of my favourite games. You lead a clan of vikings and try to score as much glory as possible. You can do that by controling the different lands of Midgard, as well as Asgard and Vanaheim, but dying gloriously in the battles of Ragnarok and having members of your clan in Valhalla can also give you victory. The game has a very nice drafting mechanism, isn't too long and usually plays quickly – but beware of players with analysis paralysis in this one. The board isn't particularly beautiful, and the wooden pawns do not strike you with their awesomeness, but it all works just fine. The cards have a strange format, so you probably won't be sleeving these.
Generally, the game is thematic, though the theme is not strongly supported by the graphic design. I enjoy playing it and would recommend it to anyone who wants a card driven, area control game with a twist. It works best with 5 players, but 4 player games are also enjoyable and even with three it works ok, if you happen to need a bit longer filler. Fans of Vikings, do not hesitate.
