Hey! That's My Fish! is an abstract strategy game with a cute theme tagged on: penguins catching fish. The game board consists of a regular array of hexagonal ice floe tiles, featuring 1, 2 or 3 fish, and at the start of the game each player places each of their penguins on any unoccupied 1-fish tile. The game play is simplicity itself; on their turn a player moves one of their penguins in a straight line to another unoccupied tile and then takes the tile the penguin was on at the start of the turn. However, penguins may not jump over other penguins or gaps left by removed tiles. The game continues until no penguin can move and the winner is the player with the most fish.
- simple enough to be played by both children and adults.
- the game is engaging and challenging as the board gradually shrinks and becomes fragmented, leaving some penguins stranded. Playing well isn't about collecting the big-scoring tiles; it's about tactical positioning to cut off opponents and leaving yourself with a huge stash of fish.
- tith two players, the game can be very strategic (think chess), but with more it becomes more chaotic and harder to plan moves ahead.
- the major downside is that it takes several minutes to set up the board, which is a noticeably long time given that the game itself usually lasts little over 10 minutes.
This game is very enjoyable for people of all ages.
(There is now a “deluxe version” with plastic moulded penguins replacing the wooden penguins of the original, but the difference is purely aesthetic.)
