This is a classic game.
1960 is a card driven game about one of the closest and most contentious presidential elections. The campaign that had it all, the Televised debates, the political realignment of north and south and the civil rights movement.
It also featured two very different and interesting political characters. John F Kennedy, the wealthy scion of the powerful (and dare I say it, dodgy) Kennedy dynasty and Richard M Nixon, the self made politician who had made his name in the brutal HUAC investigations in the 1950's before becoming Vice President under Dwight D Eisenhower. These two individuals met on the campaign trail
The players take on the roles of the two campaigns and look to win the White House by taking control of states (and thier electoral votes) You use cards to:
1/ Go out and campaign in individual staes
2/ Wage a media war, buying control of television and radio markets (which helps you shape opinion and makes it easier to maintain control when you've got it)
3/ Trigger events for special in game effects
4/ Shape opinion by getting out in front of issues
The simple and fast playing mechanism forces you to think deeply about each action, yet the game zips along at a good pace (we finished our first game in 2 hours including reading the rules and learning as we went)
The tevelised Debate and the Election day sub-games add a bit of variety (and the tension on election day is high!)
I'd question that this game has only one proven strategy but we'll see about that.
As for the components, the game looks GREAT! Its easilly one of the best £30 games out out there, with great pieces, cubes and cards. The cards are especially good with period illustration and captions and a nice finish. All of the components are a joy to handle and add to the enjoyment of a classy game
Highly, highly recomended!
